The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), instituted by the National Health Authority (NHA) of India, establishes a unified national digital health ecosystem. Under current regulations and healthcare empanelment guidelines, private hospitals, nursing homes, polyclinics, diagnostic labs, and specialised centres must integrate ABDM standards to remain eligible for government empanelment (PMJAY, CGHS, state healthcare trusts) and to process insurance reimbursements via the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX).
The Three ABDM Milestones Explained
Milestone 1 (M1) — ABHA Creation & Verification: Facilities can verify patient identity using their 14-digit ABHA number or ABHA address (@abdm). Patients scan an NHA Scan & Share QR code at the hospital reception to share demographic details instantly, eliminating paper registration slips and reducing check-in times to under 15 seconds.
Milestone 2 (M2) — Health Information Provider (HIP): The hospital software automatically bundles clinical records (prescriptions, diagnostic reports, discharge summaries) into FHIR R4 compliant structures, digitally signs them, and registers the record discovery tokens with the ABDM gateway.
